Sorry Store is not up yet.Redding Roasters Coffee List in PDF formWhy we love our business!Directions.Email Bill The RoasterThe neighbors we appreciate!
Redding Roasters was created to offer the highest quality specialty coffee to our area neighbors, (and so we the owners could finally enjoy a cup of great coffee too).
The company started from a conversation between two neighbors, after Bill (the roaster and managing member) left a prior coffee company for undisclosed reasons. Stan (the financial guy, and good neighbor) inquired where was he to get good coffee now that Bill quit his last roasting gig?
I (Bill), said I would like to help but I was not in the business anymore. Well ... Stan decided that good coffee was to hard to find and said we should do it on our own, and offer great coffee to our area neighbors too!
So it all began. First to form the company, so goes the name Redding Roasters. Then to find a location, tried to find a small space in the town of Redding, but to no avail, didn't exist, (so people still ask why we call ourselves Redding Roasters when the shop is in Bethel.
For quite a while I looked for the perfect space, everyone wanted to lease me 2000 plus square feet, it really was too much space for our little startup. The I came across a wonderful space on the end of Greenwood Avenue in Bethel Ct. It was close to home, the price was right, Needed lots of work but that was not a problem.
And the journey began.
I researched the make of our new roaster, after narrowing it down to two manufacturers I visited the roasters installed in other locations, it was a tough decision, but I decided on a Diedrich IR12 (a one to thirty pound manual roaster. It was a great choice and have not regretted it at all. The machine has great heat and airflow control, and a very good afterburner to stop any smoke release, producing the coffee taste we were looking for.
I ordered the roaster and after redoing the walls, painting, new plumbing, and a new gas lines installed we were rolling. There was a bit of time involved getting licensed also, but in the end we were going forward!
I ordered our first batch of green coffee. Decisions decisions! Brought in 10 different coffees to start, (now we have 17 regular origins, 7 Swiss Water Decafs and over 40 flavored coffees).
May 15 2004 I designated our opening day, I had seasoned the roaster with a couple of hundred pounds of Brazil Arabica beans. The coffee was tasting great by then, so I had started roasting very small batches to ensure fresh coffee for our first customers.
Visitors were few in the beginning, and I was starting to sweat! The signs were not in yet, but people were curious at all the work being done back here so they came little by little. The signs went in, and a curious visitor called, (she was from the "News Times" of Danbury). She wrote an article that was released on July 28th 2004. Front page of the food section (what a blessing). It really helped, the day it came out I had so many visitors I pretty much ran out of roasted coffee.
Since then we have had two more articles and many mentions in newsletters that have helped move us along!
So the only hurdle to overcome now, is to spread the word of our coffee to all of you, your friends and coffee lovers where ever possible to allow me to bring more origins in for all of us to sample and enjoy.
